This is the conventional story: “Army General Jayavarmal separated from the central government in million-city Angkor, from which his uncle ruled with the entire Khmer Empire. Jayavarmal built a complex of the temples, proclaimed as the King while Koh Ker becomes the capital city. The history remembers him as the King Jayavarmal IV.” My arrival to Cambodia had for a goal not only the visit to the Angkor Archaeological park with many temples, but also to visit the Koh Ker pyramid. After I saw many temples, I arrived at the conclusion that the Koh Ker pyramid is the only true, real pyramid on the Cambodian lands. IN 1938, HIGH IN THE MOUNTAINS of Bayan-Kara-Ula on the borders of China and Tibet, a team of archaeologists who were conducting a routine survey of a series of interlocking caves stumbled upon what is probably one of the most intriguing and controversial finds known to man. At first glance, no one paid much attention to the lines of neatly arranged graves, which contained the skeletons of what must have been a race of beings with spindly bodies and large heads. The archaeologists concluded that the caves had been the home of a hitherto unknown species of ape. But the presence of graves quickly made the scientists change their minds. As historical mysteries go, this is one of the bigger and stranger ones. Scientists have tried to unravel the odd events of the Younger Dryas period for years. Even now, researchers are in an ongoing struggle to find the cause or causes of the event, and are still struggling to do so, even as this article is being written. What was this Younger Dryas conundrum all about? Well, an event took place near the close of the last glacial age, when the Earth was finally warming and the glaciers in North America and Eurasia were in full and rapid retreat, and had been for millennia by that point in time.
